‘Stay in your house if you can’t fight’ – Datti Baba-Ahmed slams Peter Obi

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has criticised his erstwhile running mate, Peter Obi, over his recent political moves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In an interview released on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Baba-Ahmed said Obi should stay away from the 2027 presidential race if he is not prepared to confront political challenges head-on.

He faulted Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party, arguing that having secured the party’s presidential ticket with relative ease in 2023, he should have remained to resolve its internal crises rather than exit.

“As much as I dislike what the All Progressives Congress has done against Nigerians, someone who got the Labour Party’s ticket so easily should have stayed to fix the problem of the party no matter how difficult it is,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He further criticised Obi’s approach to political disputes.

“My former leader saying that wherever there is a quarrel, he will walk away? So there is a quarrel in Nigeria, will he walk away? If you are not ready to fight, stay in your house,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed also expressed doubts about the level of support Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso might receive from the northern region if they eventually run on a joint ticket in 2027.

Obi and Kwankwaso recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), further reshaping the opposition landscape ahead of the next general elections.

The remarks underscore growing tensions within Nigeria’s opposition bloc as political realignments intensify.
