Sowore Confirms Contact With Abia Assembly, Says Lawmakers To Set Date For Aso Rock Protest Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention
In a post on his verified social media accounts on Wednesday, Sowore wrote, “I have contacted the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State Assembly, and he informed me that they are entering a plenary session to choose a date for the protest at the Aso Rock Villa per #FreeNnamdiKanuNOW.”
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has announced that the Abia State House of Assembly is preparing to fix a date for a mass protest at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa over the continued detention and worsening health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a post on his verified social media accounts on Wednesday, Sowore wrote, “I have contacted the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State Assembly, and he informed me that they are entering a plenary session to choose a date for the protest at the Aso Rock Villa per #FreeNnamdiKanuNOW.”
“We will go with their date!” he added.
The development follows Sowore’s earlier challenge to political leaders from the South-East, including governors and lawmakers, to join him in a peaceful march to the Presidential Villa to demand Kanu’s immediate release.
In his earlier post, Sowore declared, “I will set aside my differences with some politicians for one cause. I challenge every politician or person of good conscience from the Southeast who says they want Nnamdi Kanu released to stop the rhetoric. Time for action is NOW. Let’s march to the Aso Rock Villa.”
He specifically called out Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, urging them to “step up and join in person.”
“Every governor, senator, member of the House, traditional ruler, priest, eze, Igbo person, and every Nigerian who believes in Kanu’s freedom, come out and do more than talk. I will lead this peaceful march to the Aso Rock Villa,” he said.
Reacting to the challenge, Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, quickly declared his support, writing on X, “Dear Sowore, I hereby step forward to march with you to Aso Rock to peacefully & visibly demand justice for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Who is with me? Ndigbo ahoy!”
Kanu, who has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 following his controversial arrest and rendition from Kenya, remains in custody despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
In October 2022, the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him of all charges, citing violations of international law in his extradition process.
However, the Federal Government appealed the ruling and secured a stay of execution from the Supreme Court, allowing his continued detention.
Recent revelations by Hon. Obi Agwuocha, an Abia lawmaker in the House of Representatives, that Kanu’s health had deteriorated severely while in DSS custody have reignited public concern and calls for his release.
Agwuocha had clashed openly with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on the floor of the House, insisting that “only a man who is alive can stand trial.”
He accused the Speaker and the Federal Government of ignoring multiple letters appealing for urgent medical attention for Kanu.
