Singer Tope Alabi opens up on first marriage

Popular Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi, has addressed the controversy surrounding her alleged marriage to Lekan Olaoye, the father of her first child, Ayomikun.
Alabi clarified the matter in a recent video shared on her Facebook page, saying she was never married to Olaoye as no traditional or formal marriage rites were performed.
The singer explained that she started living with Olaoye at a young age, believing it was the right decision, but later realised it was a mistake.
According to her, despite several pleas from her father, Olaoye never introduced his family or fulfilled any marital obligations.
She said her family once questioned him about when his family would come for the introduction ceremony, but he only responded with “okay,” which never materialised.
“If that ‘okay’ was ever going to come to pass, perhaps it would have been tomorrow. But tomorrow never came,” Alabi said.
“Now, I don’t even need his ‘okay’ anymore. My dear father, who once longed for it, is no longer here.”
The gospel singer also advised young women not to allow themselves to be deceived or taken advantage of by men who fail to show genuine commitment.
“Ladies, please listen to me, when a man sees that you are gullible or vulnerable, he can take advantage of you,” she warned.
Tope Alabi is currently married to Soji Alabi, whom she wed in November 2000. Their marriage is blessed with two children.
The singer was previously criticised on social media for not inviting Olaoye to their daughter’s wedding and for changing Ayomikun’s surname to that of her husband, Soji Alabi.
