Seyilaw Apologises Over Comment on Nigeria’s Security Situation
Popular Nigerian comedian Seyilaw has issued a public apology following backlash over his recent statement that Nigeria is safer now than it was ten years ago.
In a fresh message addressed to Nigerians, the entertainer admitted that his earlier remark was insensitive, especially considering the pain and trauma many citizens continue to experience due to insecurity across the country.
His Apology
In his words:
“My fellow Nigerians, I owe you this and more. You don’t deserve to have your sleep snatched away from you and the pain of one should be the pain of all. I am sincerely and deeply sorry for such insensitive statement. I apologise to victims, families and everyone who has been affected in any way by the insecurity in the country.
As a supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, I want to also use this opportunity to call on him to intensify efforts in the battle against insecurity. God bless you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The apology comes after widespread criticism on social media, where many Nigerians expressed displeasure over his earlier claim. Critics argued that insecurity remains a pressing issue, citing cases of banditry, kidnappings, armed attacks, and other violent crimes affecting different parts of the country.
Public Reactions
Following his apology, reactions have been mixed. While some Nigerians commended him for acknowledging his mistake and showing empathy toward victims, others insisted that public figures must be more sensitive when speaking on matters that directly affect people’s lives.
Supporters, however, praised him for taking responsibility and openly calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify efforts in addressing insecurity nationwide.
The Bigger Conversation
The incident has once again highlighted the broader national conversation around security in Nigeria. Insecurity remains one of the most discussed issues in the country, with citizens continually urging government authorities to strengthen measures to protect lives and property.
Seyilaw’s apology underscores the weight public commentary carries—especially from influential figures—and the importance of empathy when discussing sensitive national issues.
As debates continue, many Nigerians hope for tangible improvements in security, beyond words and political affiliations.
