Russia says it is “closely monitoring” developments in Nigeria following United States President, Donald Trump’s recent comments about possible American military intervention in the country to combat terrorist groups allegedly targeting Christian communities.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, made the disclosure on Friday during a press briefing in Moscow while responding to a question from Anadolu Agency.
“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” Zakharova said.
President Trump had on November 1 announced that he had instructed the Pentagon to draw up options for potential US military action in Nigeria to “protect Christian populations” from terrorist attacks — a remark that has since drawn mixed reactions globally.

The Kremlin’s response appears to signal unease over Washington’s possible unilateral intervention in a sovereign African nation, a move that could heighten geopolitical tensions.
Zakharova also fielded questions on other global issues, including Kazakhstan’s recent decision to join the US-brokered Abraham Accords with Israel. She said Moscow saw “no need to comment” on the development at this time.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed “grave concern” over what she described as growing Israeli violations of ceasefire agreements along the Lebanese border, warning that renewed clashes could ignite another round of violence in the Middle East.
“Moscow continues to engage with both Israeli and Lebanese sides, emphasizing the necessity to prevent any steps leading to renewed violence,” she said. “We convey to all parties involved our firm stance on the need to avoid actions that may trigger an escalation of violence and another round of armed conflict.”
Zakharova added that Russia would continue working with regional and global partners “to ensure stability in Lebanon and across the broader Middle East.”
