President Bola Tinubu has called on African leaders to unite in condemning the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, insisting that violence against fellow Africans is unacceptable.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 69th ECOWAS Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Tinubu said a united African front would send a clear message that such intolerance will not be tolerated under any guise.
He disclosed that Nigeria has evacuated over 1,490 citizens in seven batches and remains prepared to take further action.
Tinubu condemned the attacks in the strongest terms and backed Ghana’s call for ECOWAS to formally denounce the violence and raise the issue at the next African Union summit. He also reminded South Africa not to forget the role African nations, including Nigeria, played in its liberation struggle.
“South Africa should be reminded that the freedom it currently enjoys is the result of the sacrifices and liberation efforts of African countries, including Nigeria,” he said.
The President reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the newly adopted ECOWAS Compact for Regional Integration, describing it as a blueprint for rebuilding trust, deepening solidarity, and advancing peace, economic integration, and democratic governance in West Africa.
He also reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional rule, human rights, and zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government.
Tinubu pledged continued support for the proposed ECOWAS Counter Terrorism Force, intelligence sharing, joint security operations, and efforts to remove trade barriers, improve infrastructure, and drive digital transformation across the region.
