Protesters Besiege APC National Secretariat, Reject Yahaya Bello’s Participation In Kogi Central Senatorial Primaries
The protesters, who carried placards and chanted anti-Bello slogans, accused the former governor of allegedly violating the party’s constitutional processes and bringing the ruling party into disrepute.
Hundreds of aggrieved citizens from Kogi Central on Wednesday stormed the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja to protest the participation of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, in the recently concluded APC senatorial primaries in Kogi Central.
The protesters, who carried placards and chanted anti-Bello slogans, accused the former governor of allegedly violating the party’s constitutional processes and bringing the ruling party into disrepute.
The demonstrators also called on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC and President Bola Tinubu not to allow Bello emerge as the party’s senatorial candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the spokesperson, Mr. Musa Adabara, accused Bello of attempting to destroy the legacies and principles of the APC through what he described as disregard for due process.
Adabara alleged that Bello failed to attend the APC senatorial screening exercise conducted before the primaries, claiming that the former governor travelled to Lagos State instead of appearing before the screening panel.
According to him, Bello only returned to Abuja after the screening exercise had already been concluded.
Adabara said they are at the secretariat as concerned citizens of Kogi Central and loyal members of the APC to reject criminality, impunity and disregard for due process within their great party.
The explained that Yahaya Bello did not attend the APC senatorial screening exercise as required by the party. Instead, he travelled to Lagos and only returned after the screening had ended.
It has allegedly been established that he avoided the screening because of fear of the EFCC, ICPC and other security agencies over corruption and criminal allegations linked to him.
However, they called on the National Working Committee of the APC to stop Yahaya Bello from destroying the legacies and principles of the party.
They also appeal to President Bola Tinubu not to gamble with the 2027 presidential election by allowing Yahaya Bello secure the APC senatorial ticket in Kogi Central.
The protesters further claimed that presenting Bello as the APC candidate would damage the image of the ruling party and could negatively affect its electoral fortunes in future elections.
According to the group, the APC already suffered setbacks in previous elections due to internal crises and controversial political figures, warning that repeating such decisions could further weaken public confidence in the party.
Adabara added that Kogi citizens say no to criminality and failure to follow lawful party procedures.
“Yahaya Bello is widely known for disrespecting the principles of the APC and its constitution. Opposition parties and members of the public are already jubilating over the possible collapse of the party if it eventually fields people with criminal allegations as candidates,” he adeed.
The protesters urged the APC leadership to ensure transparency, fairness and strict compliance with party guidelines in the selection of candidates for future elections.
