President Tinubu Meets Labour Leaders Over Planned Protest
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday night held a closed-door meeting with leaders of organised labour at the State House, Abuja, amid growing concerns over a proposed nationwide protest.
The meeting was led by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, who represented labour unions at the high-level engagement. The dialogue is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to address workers’ grievances and ease mounting socio-economic tensions across the country.
Also present at the meeting were the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; and the Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris, who is a former labour leader. The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, equally attended the meeting.
Although details of the discussions were not officially disclosed, the talks are believed to have centred on labour’s demands, rising cost of living, workers’ welfare, and the planned protest by organised labour. Sources close to the meeting indicated that the Federal Government appealed for dialogue and patience, assuring labour leaders of its commitment to addressing their concerns through constructive engagement.
The meeting comes at a critical time as organised labour weighs its next steps, following dissatisfaction with economic reforms and their impact on workers and the general populace.
Labour leaders are expected to brief their members on the outcome of the meeting in the coming days, while Nigerians await further developments on whether the proposed protest will proceed or be suspended.
