Presidency Is Not Won Through Emotional Mobilisation’ – Banji Alabi Speaks on Peter Obi’s 2027 Bid
As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Lagos-based legal practitioner and public affairs commentator, Banji Alabi, Esq., has questioned the strength of Peter Obi’s political structure and the sustainability of the crowds attending his rallies across the country.
In a statement titled “Why Peter Obi Will Fail: The Hired Crowd Syndrome and the Hard Lessons of History,” Alabi argued that large rally attendance and social-media popularity should not be mistaken for the grassroots political machinery required to win a presidential election in Nigeria.
He also defended some of the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while urging politicians seeking the presidency to build broad-based alliances across Nigeria rather than rely primarily on regional support.

WHY PETER OBI WILL FAIL: THE HIRED CROWD SYNDROME AND THE HARD LESSONS OF HISTORY

I have watched with keen interest the recent political jamborees being paraded as campaigns by Mr. Peter Obi and his Party, and I feel compelled, as a stakeholder in the Nigerian project, to issue this statement.
1. THE STATE OF THE NATION
Let us face reality without sentiment. The Nigerian economy is in a critical state, battered by 66 years of mismanagement, corruption and cumulative decay.
There is hunger and deprivation in the land. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not create this crisis; he inherited it and has summoned the courage to reset the foundation. He has introduced bold, far-reaching and sometimes painful economic reforms — removal of fuel subsidy, unification of forex, student loan scheme, and massive infrastructural renewal — that will, with patience, bounce our economy back to prosperity. Nation-building is not theatre.
2. THE DECEPTION OF THE RENTED CROWD
Now, let us address the crowd you see at Obi’s rallies in Onitsha, Nnewi, Enugu, Awka and recently in Lagos.
What you are seeing is what I call The Hired Crowd Syndrome. This is not organic support. It is a well-oiled, well-funded crowd-renting enterprise.
In Onitsha Main Market, people were mobilized with N5,000 and wrappers. In Enugu, commercial bus drivers were paid to park and produce their passengers as supporters. In Lagos, what you saw at the Trade Fair and Alaba axis was not Peter Obi Party, it was an Igbo communal gathering monetized for cameras.
None of them came out of conviction. None came out of belief in a manifesto. They came because poverty has been weaponized. Mr. Obi is taking advantage of the poverty in the polity — he is weaponizing poverty to create a false impression of momentum.
The crowd will collect money, shout and go home. They will not vote, because they have no polling unit structure to deliver.
3. WHY HE WILL FAIL WOEFULLY
Elections in Nigeria are not won on X (Twitter) trends, Facebook likes, or Channels TV noise. Elections are won through STRUCTURE.
I mean ward executives, local government coordinators, polling unit agents in 176,846 polling units, market women leaders, NURTW, traditional rulers, student structures — a machinery built over decades.
Peter Obi has none. His Party has none.
He will not win anywhere outside the South-East. He may struggle to 20-25% in Lagos due to the large population of our Igbo brothers and sisters resident there.
In the North-West, North-East, North-Central and South-West, he will be absent on the result sheet. At the end of the day, he will fail, and fail woefully.
4. LESSONS FROM HISTORY
People fail to learn from history, and that is why history repeats itself.
Even the great Chief Obafemi Awolowo — far more intellectually endowed, more administratively proven, more ideologically grounded than Peter Obi — could not win the Presidency of Nigeria through a regional party. Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu tried it. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe tried it. They all failed.
You cannot become President of Nigeria by standing on an ethnic pedestal and mobilizing one region against the rest. To win the Presidency, you must join the mainstream.
5. MY POSITION ON IGBO PRESIDENCY
For equity, justice and good conscience, I am 100% for an Igbo Presidency. The Igbos are industrious, brilliant and deserving. But the path to Aso Rock is not through insulting other tribes, blackmailing the nation and renting crowds.
The Igbos must come to the mainstream of Nigerian politics — they must build bridges, build alliances, and negotiate with the North and the South-West.
Presidency is not given by emotional blackmail; it is earned by political collaboration.
CONCLUSION
The 2027 election will not be won by who shouts the loudest, but by who is structured the deepest. The hired crowd will disappear after collecting their stipend. The structure will remain to deliver votes.
Sentiment does not win elections. Structure does.
