Popular musician dies after alleged attack by girlfriend’s ex-lover

Veteran Ugandan musician Matovu Moses, co-founder of the Afrigo Band, has died after he was reportedly attacked while accompanying his girlfriend.

In a statement by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Kawala Rachael, the death occurred in the Kampala District around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday when the saxophonist was attacked.

Kampala police said preliminary investigations showed that Mr Moses and his girlfriend were leaving a house in the area when his lover’s ex assaulted him.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that at approximately 5:30 a.m., the deceased went to the residence of his girlfriend. It is alleged that as he and the lady were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a male suspect who is also alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same lady,” the police stated.

The 77-year-old was rushed to Kibuli Hospital on a motorcycle but succumbed to his injuries, which authorities revealed were “serious”.

The police also confirmed they immediately arrested the girlfriend, who was assisting with the investigation, adding that the alleged assailant had been identified and efforts were underway to arrest him.

“Following the arrest of the female who was in the company of the deceased, preliminary information indicates that the incident may have arisen from a physical altercation,” the police said. “However, the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and subsequent death are yet to be fully established.”

The statement added, “The female suspect remains in police custody and is assisting detectives with the ongoing investigations. The male suspect has been positively identified and is believed to have fled the scene. Police are actively pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and assist in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
