Police Detain Notorious Thug, Asimiyu For Brutally Assaulting Woman In Lagos
SaharaReporters gathered that the incident followed a fight between two women who were tenants of the said thug.
Anotorious thug, Asimiyu also known as Chairman in Adama community, Ketu area in Lagos State, has been arrested and detained by the Nigerian police after he allegedly led a brutal assault on a woman who tried to prevent him from beating another female resident.
SaharaReporters gathered that the incident followed a fight between two women who were tenants of the said thug.
Asimiyu, described as a local terror with political connections in the area, reportedly mobilised his boys with canes and descended on one of the women, allegedly in defence of the other.
According to a resident familiar with the incident, the trouble began on Tuesday night and escalated the next morning.
“The issue started from Tuesday night. Two women fought and one of them went to tell Chairman, so he mobilised thugs with cane on Wednesday morning to beat the second woman,” the source told SaharaReporters.
“The second woman happens to be a friend to Wunmi, Iya Ayo. So she could not withstand her friend being beaten, so she begged Chairman and his men to leave her. To her surprise, the chairman swiftly turned attention to Wunmi and beat her mercilessly. You could see the video.”
Speaking exclusively to SaharaReporters, the assaulted woman, Wunmi, popularly called Iya Ayo in the community, narrated her ordeal.
“The two people that were fighting are tenants to the chairman and one of them is my friend. I was not among those fighting. My only offence was that I begged Chairman not to beat my friend. So instead of beating my friend, he asked his boys to beat me,” she said.
Wunmi confirmed that the thug has now been arrested and is currently being held at the Ojudu Police Station.
Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comments proved abortive as he did not respond to repeated phone calls and messages sent to his known mobile line.
Community members who spoke to SaharaReporters said Chairman has long operated with impunity in the area, allegedly serving as a political enforcer and enjoying cover from influential figures.
“This is not his first time harassing people,” another resident said.
“But this time, there is video evidence and we hope the police will not cover this up.”
