Police Deploy Special Squad to Enforce Ban on VIP Escorts
The Nigeria Police Force has formed a Special Enforcement Team to ensure full compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s order prohibiting police officers from serving as escorts for Very Important Persons.
In a statement on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin announced that the monitoring operation began in Lagos on December 6, with teams stationed at strategic locations including the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The police reported “satisfactory and commendable” adherence during initial checks, with no unauthorized escorts observed and no arrests made. Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun reaffirmed the commitment to reassign officers to core policing duties to enhance nationwide security.
The police assured that enforcement will continue across the country “without fear or favour” and urged public support for the move toward a more professional and community-focused security system. Under the directive, VIP protection will now be handled by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, allowing police personnel to focus on frontline security operations.
