Police Arrests Man For Allegedly Beating Wife To Death Over Food
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday after an argument between the couple allegedly escalated into violence inside their home.
The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Musbawu Amodu, for allegedly beating his 20-year-old wife to death following a domestic altercation in Angwan Yahaya, Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday after an argument between the couple allegedly escalated into violence inside their home.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the case was reported to the Agyaragu Police Division at about 12:30am prompting officers to immediately respond to the scene.
He said the victim was evacuated to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH), Lafia, where medical personnel confirmed her death and preserved her body for further examination.
Police said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and allegedly confessed during interrogation.
According to Nansel, the suspect told investigators that he assaulted his wife in a fit of anger after she allegedly refused to prepare food for him, adding that the disagreement degenerated into a violent confrontation that proved fatal.
The police spokesperson said the suspect also expressed regret over the incident.
The deceased, whose identity was not disclosed by the police, is survived by two children — a boy and a girl — from the couple’s six-year marriage.
Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Mohammed, directed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia for a comprehensive investigation.
The Commissioner assured the public that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of the investigation.
He also condemned domestic violence, describing the killing as a tragic and avoidable incident.
Mohammed urged couples to resolve disagreements through dialogue and other lawful means rather than resorting to violence, warning that acts of domestic abuse often have irreversible consequences.
The police further stated that security personnel continue to monitor Agyaragu and neighbouring communities, assuring residents that the situation remains calm and under control.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over cases of domestic violence in Nigeria, with rights groups repeatedly calling for stronger protection for victims and stricter enforcement of laws against gender-based violence.
