Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber Linked To Ekiti University Hostel Attacks
Eyewitnesses said that the armed attackers stormed the hostels located off-campus and moved from hostel to hostel, robbing students of their valuables, including mobile phones, laptops and cash.
The Ekiti State Police Command has said that its operatives have arrested a suspected armed robber linked to the invasion and robbery of students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Iworoko-Ekiti, in their hostels.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that panic and chaos erupted late Monday night as gunmen reportedly attacked some hostels of EKSU students, forcing many students to flee for safety.
Eyewitnesses said that the armed attackers stormed the hostels located off-campus and moved from hostel to hostel, robbing students of their valuables, including mobile phones, laptops and cash.
A student of the institution, using the X (formerly Twitter) handle @yapperaholicc, confirmed the attack in a post on the platform, noting that such incidents have become increasingly common in the area. In a tweet posted around 3:01 a.m. on Tuesday, the student wrote, “Armed men are attacking students in their hostels in EKSU at midnight!!!!!”
The student, tweeting from the handle @yapperaholicc, said the attack took place in the Phase 2 area of the university community, adding, “We are supposed to be reading for our exams!!!!!”
They further noted, “It has been going on for three days now!!! They are also robbing us. Please help us repost…”
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, the police said they were aware of an incident that occurred on March 27.
The police spokesperson said the suspects, who arrived on a motorcycle, forcefully gained entry into the hostels where EKSU students reside before carrying out the theft.
“On 27/3/2026, the Command received a distress information that some suspected thieves, who came on a motorcycle, forcefully entered some hostels where Students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Iworoko-Ekiti, reside and stole their phones,” the statement read.
Sunday said that following the report, operatives attached to the Iworoko Divisional Police Headquarters were mobilised to track down the perpetrators.
He said, “Upon the receipt of the information, Iworoko Divisional Police Headquarters swung into action and arrested one of the suspects on 30/3/2026 at about 0230hrs.”
He said items recovered from the suspect include a face mask and a motorcycle believed to have been used in carrying out the operation.
Sunday confirmed that the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation and efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.
“He has been transferred to the State Headquarters for thorough investigation, possible arrest of the fleeing suspects and prosecution,” he stated.
Reacting to the development, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
He assured that measures had been put in place to prevent a recurrence of such incidents across the state.
He said the Commissioner of Police charged everyone to be security conscious and promptly report to the police any ugly incident or suspicious persons found in their environment.
According to him, necessary measures have been put in place to forestall the reoccurrence of such incidents and other ugly incidents in the area and anywhere across the state.
Sunday added that investigations are ongoing.
