Players, officials injured as Rivers United’s bus crashes en route Federations Cup match
Rivers United, Nigeria Professional Football League side, says the team bus conveying players and staff was involved in an auto accident on Thursday.
The accident happened on the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road, Port Harcourt, with the club en route Awka, Anambra, to honour the President’s Federations Cup round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.
The team bus went off the road shortly after the team left its Port Harcourt camp, with visible damages observed on the bus.
“We wish to inform its supporters, stakeholders, and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while traveling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United,” the statement reads.
“The incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from the club’s camp.”
The club revealed that some players and team officials sustained minor injuries, and no fatality was recorded. It also revealed that the travelling contingent is receiving medical attention, and concerned individuals are in stable conditions.
“We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition.”
“The safety, health, and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. The club’s medical team is closely monitoring those involved, while management continues to assess the situation and make necessary arrangements.
The Pride of Rivers further appreciated the outpour of emotions towards the team, and will provide further update on its plans for the cup fixture that comes up on Saturday, June 6.

“Further updates regarding the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup fixture will be communicated in due course.”
The latest auto accident comes months after Bayelsa United’s team bus had a similar scare on Abuja road while travelling to honour a league fixture against Kano Pillars in Kano State.
