The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday emphasized that genuine and enduring peace in Rivers State hinges on Governor Siminalayi Fubara fully embracing collaboration by “opening his door” to key stakeholders, including himself and his supporters.
Speaking during a high-profile media chat broadcast live and widely followed across the state, Wike addressed the lingering political tensions that have defined Rivers politics since the 2023 governorship transition. The former governor, who remains a dominant figure in the state’s PDP structure and beyond, reiterated his commitment to reconciliation but placed a clear condition on its sustainability.
“The peace will last if he (Gov Fubara) opens his door for us,” Wike stated pointedly, underscoring the need for open communication, inclusivity, and mutual access among political leaders to prevent a relapse into crisis.
The remark comes amid multiple rounds of peace deals brokered by President Bola Tinubu, including recent truces that saw Wike and Fubara publicly affirming a return to harmony and a shared resolve to work together for the state’s progress. In June 2025, both leaders appeared together in interviews declaring that “everything is over” regarding past disagreements, with Fubara vowing to sustain peace and Wike describing the resolution as a moment to thank God for ending acrimony.
However, Wike’s latest comments during the media engagement suggest that while surface-level agreements exist, deeper cooperation remains essential.
