Oyo Police Arrest Cable Thief, Recover N2.69m Worth of Cables
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, Ayomide Ojo, for allegedly vandalising and stealing house-wiring cables worth about N2.69 million in Ogbomoso.
The suspect was arrested at about 5:30 a.m. on September 21 by operatives of the Monitoring Unit attached to the Ogbomoso Base during an anti-crime patrol along Bosunla Street.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the suspect was accosted while carrying a sack filled with house-wiring cables suspected to have been removed from a building under construction in the Ogbomoso township.
During preliminary interrogation, the police said Ojo confessed to carrying out the vandalism with an accomplice identified as Warris, who is currently at large.
The suspect reportedly led the operatives to an uncompleted building opposite Akala House, where the cables were allegedly vandalised.
The owner of the property, Salaudeen Rasaq, was contacted and reportedly valued the stolen cables at N2.692 million.
The police said investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice and identify other persons allegedly involved in receiving and disposing of vandalised cables.
The Command also urged residents to provide actionable information on the activities of cable vandals, thieves and receivers of stolen property.
