Between 2021 and 2025, the Nigerian National Assembly reportedly added over ₦10.96 trillion worth of projects to the national budget without open debate or clear public interest.
According to BudgIT, a civic tech group, lawmakers inserted more than 30,000 constituency projects over four budget cycles, many of which critics say serve political gains instead of national needs.
In its latest report, BudgIT revealed that the 2025 budget alone contains over 11,000 inserted projects, valued at ₦6.9 trillion.
These include expensive items like boreholes, streetlights, town halls, ICT infrastructure, and even funds for traditional rulers.
Some of the projects are tagged with price tags of over ₦5 billion each, with a large portion targeting specific constituencies or senatorial districts.
Groups like SERAP and CACOL have slammed these actions, calling them a misuse of legislative authority.
They insist that lawmakers are supposed to make laws and approve budgets not sneak in projects or directly influence spending.
Describing the actions as fraudulent, they’re urging anti-corruption bodies like the EFCC and ICPC to launch urgent investigations and prosecute those involved.
The groups also called on the President to scrutinise budget proposals more closely before approval, warning that failure to do so could be seen as dereliction of duty.
