The political tension ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State escalated on Tuesday after popular singer Davido publicly attacked former governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, prompting a sharp response from the minister’s aide.
Davido stirred controversy after posting on X, formerly Twitter, where he accused Oyetola of political desperation in a message that quickly gained traction across social media.
In the post, the singer described Oyetola as “the most desperate politician in the world” and declared that an alleged political plan associated with the former governor would fail.
Although Davido did not explain the specific plan he was referring to, the comments sparked widespread reactions among political supporters and critics, adding to the already charged atmosphere in the state.
The development comes as political activities intensify ahead of the Osun governorship election, with public figures and allies of leading political actors increasingly taking their disagreements to social media platforms.
Reacting to the singer’s remarks, Special Adviser to Oyetola, Bolaji Akinola, issued a strongly worded statement condemning Davido’s comments and accusing him of disrespect.
Akinola said the singer’s outburst was politically motivated and inconsistent with Yoruba values, stressing that respect for elders remains a core cultural principle.
He also defended Oyetola’s record in office, insisting that the former governor’s achievements speak for themselves and should not be overshadowed by what he described as celebrity-driven political drama.
The aide further used the opportunity to criticise the administration of Ademola Adeleke, predicting that the incumbent governor would be defeated in the 2026 election.
According to Akinola, residents of Osun are more concerned with governance than social media exchanges and would not be swayed by celebrity influence or online campaigns.
The exchange has further heightened political tensions in the state, where supporters of both Adeleke and Oyetola have increasingly engaged in public disputes in recent weeks.
As of the time of filing this report, Oyetola himself had not personally responded to Davido’s statement, but the online confrontation has once again brought celebrity involvement into the centre of Osun’s political contest ahead of the crucial 2026 poll.
