One Dead, Several Injured as Fire Guts Popular Dominican Republic Resort
At least one person has died and several others were injured following a massive fire at a popular tourist resort in the Dominican Republic, authorities said.
The blaze broke out on Friday at the Viva Dominicus Bayahibe resort in La Altagracia, forcing the evacuation of about 1,700 guests and staff. Dramatic footage from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from a section of the resort.
Emergency officials confirmed that Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian woman, died in the incident.
According to the Dominican Republic’s emergency service, three people were taken to medical facilities for treatment, while six others received medical attention at the scene. Those affected included resort guests, visitors, and emergency responders.
The resort, a popular destination for international tourists, including many visitors from the United States, was evacuated as emergency teams worked to contain the fire.
