NYSC Members Identify Alleged Independence Day Kidnappers In Owerri Court

Two prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) kidnapped in Imo State on Independence Day have identified five defendants standing trial over the abduction as the persons who allegedly held them hostage.

The identification took place on Tuesday during the resumed hearing of the case at the Imo State High Court in Owerri, where the defendants are facing charges bordering on kidnapping, conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

The prospective corps members were among 20 people abducted on October 1, 2026, while travelling to their orientation camp in the state.

The court had earlier granted an application by the prosecution for the witnesses to appear in masks and have their identities concealed for security reasons.

Identifying themselves in court as Miss A and Miss B, the witnesses told the court that they recognised the defendants as the armed men who abducted them on October 1 and took them into the bush, where they were held hostage.

During a related proceeding involving charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, hostage-taking and unlawful possession of firearms, the witnesses also identified the defendants as those who allegedly abducted them.

Presiding judge, Justice Emeka Orafu, admitted the witnesses’ statements into evidence, ruling that the documents were relevant and admissible for the determination of the case.

Following the testimonies, the prosecution informed the court that it had concluded its case and formally announced the closure of its presentation.

At the close of proceedings, Justice Orafu commended counsel for their diligence and directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to allow defence lawyers unrestricted access to the defendants, as permitted by law, to enable them to prepare their defence.

The court adjourned the two cases until November 5 and 6, 2026, respectively, for continuation of proceedings and the opening of the defence.
