Nobody Can Stop Me From Going Anywhere In Nigeria — Sheikh Gumi Blows Hot
Popular Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has dismissed allegations that his visit to Ibadan last year was part of efforts to Islamise Oyo State or promote northern religious interests in the South-West.
Reacting to criticisms that resurfaced following recent security concerns in Oyo State, Gumi insisted that no individual or group could prevent him from travelling to any part of Nigeria. He also clarified that his visit to Ibadan was not at the invitation of any Muslim organisation or individual in the South-West.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the cleric said he attended the event solely as a representative of a coalition of northern Islamic scholars.
“I now understand how Islamophobia is shaping politics in the South-West and why I was dr@gged into local political controversies,” he wrote.
“I was in Ibadan not at the invitation of any South-West Muslim individual or group, but as a representative of the Coalition of Northern Muslim Ulama.
“Can anybody stop me from going anywhere in Nigeria?”
Gumi’s remarks came a day after one of the victims abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State debunked reports that the k+dnappers had demanded the introduction of Sharia law in the state as a condition for their release.
Gumi visited Ibadan on November 19, 2025, as a guest speaker at the Southern Nigerian Ulama Summit held at University of Ibadan. During the visit, he also participated in a courtesy meeting attended by prominent Muslim scholars from both northern and southern Nigeria.
