Nnamdi Kanu Yields to Court’s Advice, Set to Meet Legal Team Before Continuing Defense

Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has agreed to consult with his legal team before proceeding with his defense in the ongoing terrorism charges brought against him by the Nigerian Federal Government.

This decision came during a hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Justice James Omotosho urged Kanu to seek advice from his lawyers, emphasizing the importance of legal counsel in such a serious case.

The court has adjourned the matter until November 7, 2025, giving Kanu a final opportunity to open his defense or risk forfeiting that right. This marks a shift from Kanu’s earlier stance.

On October 27, 2025, he had refused to defend himself, arguing that the charges lacked validity and that the court did not have jurisdiction over his case, which stems from his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021.

The judge had previously appealed to him “in God’s name” to reconsider and consult lawyers, highlighting the procedural risks of proceeding without representation.
