Nigerian Police Order Conversion Of Conventional Officers In Government Houses To SPU Personnel

According to the directive, all conventional police personnel currently attached or deployed to government houses nationwide are to be immediately converted to SPU personnel and properly documented at SPU bases located in their respective states.

The Nigeria Police Force has directed the immediate conversion and documentation of all conventional police personnel currently attached to government houses across the country into officers of the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

The directive was contained in a police wireless message dated September 14, 2026, obtained by SaharaReporters with reference DTO: 141028/09/2026, issued from the Nigeria Police Department of Operations (NIGPOL DOPS), Abuja.

The message, marked “M/IMMEDIATE” and classified as “VERY IMPORTANT,” was addressed to AIG Zones 1–17/Protect and Commissioners of Police in all states, with several police formations and departments listed for information.

According to the directive, all conventional police personnel currently attached or deployed to government houses nationwide are to be immediately converted to SPU personnel and properly documented at SPU bases located in their respective states.

The directive is contained under the heading: “X ORDER AND DIRECTIVES X CONVERSION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ALL CONVENTIONAL POLICE PERSONNEL ATTACHED TO GOVERNMENT HOUSES UNDER SPECIAL PROTECTION UNIT.”

The Inspector-General of Police, through the Department of Operations, directed that the affected personnel be identified, verified and profiled by the relevant police authorities.

The wireless message stated that all conventional police personnel currently attached/deployed to government houses across the country must be converted to Special Protection Unit personnel and documented at SPU bases in their respective states.

However, personnel belonging to certain specialised police formations have been exempted from the directive.

The message specifically exempted personnel from the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL), Counter-Terrorism Force (TERROFOR), State Intelligence Service (SIS), Bomb Disposal Unit (BOMBFOR) and K9 units who are currently attached to government houses.

Those officers, according to the directive, are to retain their present unit status.

The police authorities further directed all state command Commissioners of Police and SPU base commanders to ensure the immediate identification, verification and profiling of all personnel affected by the new directive within their respective areas of responsibility.

They were also ordered to maintain accurate records of all personnel affected by the conversion.

The message warned that any irregularity, non-compliance or unauthorised deployment would be sanctioned, placing responsibility on command commissioners and base commanders to ensure strict adherence.

The directive further instructed the relevant police authorities to submit compliance reports to the Nigeria Police Department of Operations through the AIG Police, Protect.

The wireless message was copied to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Secretary to the Inspector-General, Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), Department of Training and Development (DTD), Force Intelligence Department (FID), Department of Logistics and Supply (DLS), Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Research and Planning (R&P), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Forensic Science (FORSEC), Force Headquarters, Abuja, among others.

It was also copied to the AIG Police, MOPOL/TERROFOR, Commissioners of Police in specialised units, BOMBFOR and K9 formations.
