Nigerian Defence Headquarters DHQ Alerts Public Over Breach Of Official X Account, Warns Against Suspicious Posts

The DHQ disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Abuja has raised the alarm over an attempted unauthorised compromise of its official X (formerly Twitter) account, urging members of the public to disregard any suspicious or misleading content that may be published from the account.

The DHQ disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.

According to the military authorities, the incident is being treated as a cybersecurity matter, with technical measures already activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.

“The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) wishes to inform members of the public, the media and all stakeholders that it has detected an attempted unauthorised compromise of its official X (formerly Twitter) account,” Uba stated.

“The incident is currently being treated as a cybersecurity matter, and appropriate technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.”

The military said efforts were ongoing to fully restore control of the official account, warning that unauthorised individuals could potentially use the platform to circulate false information.

“The Defence Headquarters assures the public that efforts are ongoing to fully restore control of the official account,” Uba added.

“Consequently, members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period.”

The DHQ said the incident underscores its commitment to information security and the need to ensure that official information about the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains accurate and credible.

“The DHQ remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of information security and ensuring that the public continues to receive accurate, timely and credible information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” Uba added.

The military authorities appealed to the public to remain vigilant while efforts to secure the account continue.

“We appreciate the understanding and vigilance of the public and will provide further updates as necessary,” Uba stated.
