Nigerian becomes UK youngest mayor
The University of Westminster has celebrated 29-year-old British-Nigerian woman, Opeyemi Bright, inaugurated as the Civic Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Bright became the United Kingdom’s youngest mayor on May 16, 2025 at a historic event at the Barking Town Hall.
She won the mayoral election in March, having served as a borough councillor for seven years.
Celebrating her mayoral victory, the University of Westminster described Bright, its alumna, as “a fantastic role model for the future.”
The university’s Senior Alumni Communications Officer, Jennifer Stubberfield, made this known in a statement on the school’s website.
Stubberfield said, “This is an outstanding achievement and we are so proud of Princess and her dedication to supporting the local community.”
Bright graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Accounting and Business Management from the University of Westminster.
Meanwhile, another Nigerian, Jason Jackson, also emerged as the Mayor of Islington, London, over the last weekend.
Reacting on his Instagram page, Jackson attributed his success to determination and faith as he said, “No dream is too distant.”
“I’m here to serve with purpose and passion,” he said.
“I’ll champion our diverse communities, support families and young people, uplift local businesses, and ensure everyone in Islington feels seen and heard.”
