Nigeria Police Turn Down N100m Bribe, Arrest Suspects in Rail Vandalism Case
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have rejected a N100 million bribe while dismantling a major railway vandalism syndicate and recovering materials worth over N400 million.
The operation, carried out by the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad, led to the arrest of two suspects, Chisom Goodnews, 32, and Ahmed Adamu, 22, in Akwanga on April 9, 2026.
According to police spokesperson Anthony Placid, the suspects were caught after intelligence reports led officers to intercept a trailer transporting about 60 tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers. The items were hidden under sacks of groundnut shells to avoid detection while being moved from Bauchi State to Ilorin.
Investigations revealed the involvement of a wider criminal network, with the truck driver allegedly hired for N2.5 million to transport the stolen materials. Authorities say the operation exposed an organised supply chain linked to buyers of vandalised public infrastructure.
During the investigation, suspects reportedly offered police officers a N100 million bribe in an attempt to compromise the case and secure their release. However, the officers refused the offer.
The trailer truck used for the operation has been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, praised the officers for their integrity, describing their actions as a strong example of discipline, courage, and professionalism within the force.
