Former First Lady, Maryam Sani Abacha, has reignited national debate over the legacy of her late husband, Sani Abacha, with a controversial claim regarding funds recovered after his death.

Speaking during a recent interview, Maryam Abacha dismissed long-standing allegations that the billions of dollars linked to the late military ruler were proceeds of corruption. Instead, she insisted that the money was deliberately set aside for the benefit of Nigeria and its future development.

According to her, the narrative that her husband looted public funds has been unfairly promoted over the years, while little attention has been paid to what happened to the recovered assets after they were returned to government control.

“The money my husband kept for Nigeria vanished within a few months, yet nobody talks about that. We need to stop spreading lies and pray for Nigeria,” she reportedly stated.

Her remarks have once again reopened one of the most contentious chapters in Nigeria’s political history.

For decades, successive Nigerian administrations, alongside foreign governments and international agencies, have recovered and repatriated funds allegedly linked to General Abacha.
