Mustapha Abdullahi Wins Nigeria Basketball Federation Presidency
His emergence was announced by the DAM Foundation, which congratulated its founder on his victory and expressed optimism that his leadership would advance the development of basketball in Nigeria.

Dr Mustapha Abdullahi has emerged as the President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) after securing 40 out of 48 votes at the federation’s elective congress in Abuja.
His emergence was announced by the DAM Foundation, which congratulated its founder on his victory and expressed optimism that his leadership would advance the development of basketball in Nigeria.
The foundation said Abdullahi’s election marked a new chapter in his efforts to promote the sport, particularly through grassroots development and the creation of opportunities for young talents.
It expressed hope that his tenure would bring stronger grassroots structures, improved players’ welfare, increased investment in basketball and more opportunities for young Nigerians to pursue careers in sports.
The foundation also prayed for wisdom, strength and guidance for Abdullahi as he takes on the responsibility of leading the federation.
Before the election, Abdullahi unveiled a 100-day action plan aimed at reforming the federation, reviving domestic competitions and establishing a structured pathway for basketball development across the country.
He presented his “New Dawn” agenda on Wednesday, October 7, in Abuja while formally declaring his intention to contest the NBBF presidency ahead of the October 15, 2026, elective congress.
Abdullahi said the election presented an opportunity to determine the future direction of Nigerian basketball, arguing that the country’s abundance of talent would remain underutilised without stronger institutions, sustainable investment and a coordinated development system.
“I believe Nigerian basketball has enormous potential, but that potential must now be matched with a stronger institution, sustainable investment, professional administration and a clear development pathway,” he said.
Under his proposed agenda, Abdullahi pledged to establish a coordinated national schools basketball programme, regional talent centres and a national talent identification and player-tracking system.
He also proposed strengthening competitions from the local government to national levels and creating a structured pathway connecting schools, academies, clubs, leagues and national teams.
Restoring confidence in domestic competitions was another priority outlined in his programme.
He proposed predictable competition calendars, improved club licensing, better player contracts and welfare, upgraded venues, digital statistics and stronger broadcasting and commercial platforms.
“Nigerian players should not have to remain inactive for long periods simply because our domestic system is unable to provide regular competition,” he said.
Abdullahi also pledged to improve the capacity of coaches, referees, statisticians, physiotherapists, team managers and other technical personnel through regular training, certification and international exposure.
Ahead of the election, he urged delegates to support his programme, declaring: “Together, we can move Nigerian basketball from potential to podium.”
His election now presents an opportunity to implement the proposed reforms and address challenges affecting grassroots development, domestic competitions and players’ welfare in Nigerian basketball.
