Chibuzor Chinyere, the general overseer of Omega Power Ministry (OPM), has apologised following widespread backlash over a social media post in which he sought a wife for his adopted son, who is autistic.
The controversy began when the cleric shared a photo on Facebook of himself and the young man, identified as Aboy.
In the post, Chinyere offered significant financial incentives to any woman willing to marry him.
He explained that the boy had been abandoned at his church gate by unknown parents and had been raised under his care.
He noted that the prospective wife could be a single mother or an older woman but stipulated that she “must not be autistic”.
“Marry him and get benefits. Since the unknown parents dump him at my gate, he has been growing to become a man. Any lady that accepts to marry him. All marrital rites would be paid. Free accommodation for life, monthly salary for live, as house shall be built for the 2 couples of them,” he wrote.
“Free medical for both couples for life, vacation overseas for both couples. She can be a single mother, a grand mother etc. But she must not be autistic and many other huge financial benefits. Any interested girl or woman, go to opm headquarters ask of head of OPM welfare.”
The proposal was met with swift outrage on social media. Critics condemned the approach as transactional and insensitive.
“This is not right at all. Marriage isn’t a transaction or incentives,” an X user wrote.
“If he were a woman, they wouldn’t do this to get her a husband. Women have suffered,” another X user added.
“I think what this young man needs is medical treatment not marriage, they should look for a way to treat him, first before taking about getting him a wife,” an X user wrote.

In response to the backlash, Chinyere took to Facebook again to apologise, stating he had not anticipated that the proposal would offend women. He defended his intentions, noting that individuals with autism can and do marry.
The cleric provided further context, explaining that he has taken in over 500 abandoned children.
He described Aboy’s situation as particularly challenging due to his condition, stating that the boy cannot speak nor fully understand his physical development, especially regarding emerging sexual urges.
Chinyere claimed this has raised concerns about the safety of other children in his care.
He outlined the difficult options he considered, including abandoning the boy, which he dismissed due to his religious beliefs, or arranging for someone to satisfy the boy’s needs outside of marriage, which he said would be a sin.
“Apologies to all ladies, I never knew it hurt you like this. If you google the internet you will find many autistic men marrying normal ladies, it’s not a crime. But am sorry to our beautiful feel embarrassed by my proposal. I accommodate more than 500 children that were dumped at my gate all because I was moved with compassion,” he said.
“So Aboy’s case was because of compassion. When I observed this uncontrollable urge for sex on him and him not understanding what is happening to his body, I wipe for him. If it is something he can understand when you speak to him, it would be easier. But he does not understand anything neither can he speak. And the strange part anytime other children are taking his bath everything will stand and refuse to go down.
“And the huge equipment he is carrying is scaring the boys bathing him, it’s too big. My fear let not use it on other children, it may kill them because of the size. So I have 2 options. Option 1, instruct one of my drivers to go and drop him off in any junction, but GOD may kill me if I abandon him. Option 2, get someone to help him kill the storm, but that would be fornication and it is sin.
“Option 3, make it legal by paying bride price of a grand mother or any advanced lady. That would be feeding, clothing him and taking care of his sexual needs Send them overseas for vacation. Build house on there both names for them. Place her on salary for life. But she must not kill the boy. If she kills the boy, she loses everything.”
