Many trapped, dead as 3-storey building collapses in Abuja

A three-storey residential building under construction on Saturday collapsed at Durumi area, near popular Gudu market in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Our Heritage Reporter online photo journalist who was at the scene of the incident, reports that already up to seven victims have been brought out of the rubble as at noon period.

One came out alive.

It was gathered that rescue efforts anchored by authorities were still on as at the time of filing this report.

The number of casualties were yet to be ascertained.

Reacting, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who was at the scene, said the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had directed that all casualties be given free medical treatment.

Emergency personnel, including officials of the Federal Fire Service, health workers, security agencies and local volunteers, were carrying out search-and-rescue operations as anxious residents gathered around the scene.

Frequency of collapse occurrence

Building collapse rarely occur in Abuja, unlike in Lagos state.

However, such incident reportedly take place at a site where there appears to be minimal supervision.

Most recent happening

The most recent building collapse occurred at Jikwoyi, a suburb within AMAC.

It was a two-storey building, with seven workers reportedly injured in the collapse.

At that time, FCT minister Wike reportedly ordered the arrest of the building owner.

As at the time of the latest happening on May 16, 2026, no update has been issued by the FCTA authorities on the Jikwoyi incident.
