Man Shot During Assassination Attempt On Trump In Pennsylvania Dies

James Copenhaver, one of three people shot during an assassination attempt on then-US presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, has died.
Copenhaver was attending the July 13, 2024 rally in Butler when a 20-year-old gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop.
He was shot in the arm and abdomen and suffered injuries that required several surgeries, leaving him with lasting health problems and dependent on a cane to walk.
His lawyer, Joseph Feldman, announced his death in a statement issued on behalf of his family. Copenhaver was 76.
“James’s dedication to this great country was a defining part of his life,” the statement said.
“As a veteran, he proudly served our nation in the armed forces, and his love of country never wavered.
“James was a true American patriot who believed deeply in the freedoms and ideals upon which this nation was founded, and he embodied the very best traits of our great nation.”
It was not immediately known whether Copenhaver’s death was caused by the injuries he suffered in the shooting.
He underwent several operations, including treatment for a transected colon, and suffered kidney damage and loss of feeling in his leg.
Trump, who was grazed in the right ear during the attack, paid tribute to Copenhaver on Thursday, describing him as a “true American Patriot”.
“Jim showed tremendous bravery, courageously continuing to FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT, and maintaining a positive spirit despite unimaginable hardships,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, sued the US federal government in June, alleging that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security had “utterly failed” to provide adequate security at the rally.
Another attendee, David Dutch, was wounded and survived, while Corey Comperatore was killed after shielding his family from the gunfire.
The gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
