Man beaten, arrested in Lagos after stealing Toyota truck, killing 4 dispatch riders

A man has been beaten and arrested in Lagos State after allegedly stealing a Toyota Tundra truck and embarking on a deadly driving spree that reportedly killed four dispatch riders and injured several others.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, posed as a prospective buyer at a car dealership in Victoria Garden City, VGC, on Monday, October 12, 2026. According to an account shared on X by user @abefe_survival, he collected the vehicle’s key under the pretence of conducting a test drive before locking the doors and fleeing with the truck.

“This dude lied he wanted to buy Tundra truck at VGC, immediately they gave him the key to test run, he put the Truck on central locked and started running,” the X user wrote. “He entered VGC without access code and broken their security machine, he drove out back and even hit a security.”

The suspect then drove towards the Chevron alternative route, where he crashed into several vehicles and struck pedestrians, including dispatch riders. The account claimed four dispatch riders were killed, alongside other bystanders and workers in the area.

The X user said he attempted to stop the fleeing driver by asking people to place tyres and large stones on the road, but the suspect continued driving despite the obstructions, damaging more vehicles in the process. The truck eventually drove into Ajiran, where it veered off the road and plunged into a water-filled ditch.

Videos circulating online show the damaged black Toyota Tundra partly submerged in water as residents pulled the shirtless suspect out. An angry crowd descended on him, physically assaulting him before he was handed over to the authorities.

The Lagos State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the incident. As of the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether the suspect had been formally charged. Efforts to reach the Command were unsuccessful.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about vehicle theft and reckless driving in Lagos. In July 2026, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority arrested a tanker driver who allegedly fled after fatally knocking down a dispatch rider in the Maryland area. In May 2026, a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers was arraigned for the alleged killing of a dispatch rider in Lagos Island.

Dispatch riders have become a frequent target of road accidents in Lagos, with several fatalities recorded in 2026 alone. The rising number of incidents has prompted calls for stricter regulation of commercial motorcycle operators and improved road safety enforcement across the state.
