Lagos returnee killed by mob two weeks to wedding
A Nigerian man who returned from abroad to get married has reportedly lost his life following a mob attack on Lagos Island, with his wedding only about two weeks away.

The deceased, identified simply as Basit, was attacked on Wednesday night after he was accused of knocking down a man in the Patey area.
The incident reportedly began around Freeman Street, where a resident was crossing the road when Basit allegedly hit him with his vehicle.
Rather than remain at the scene, Basit was said to have continued driving. Some people in the area consequently went after him, eventually catching up with him and launching an attack.
One witness said the crowd assaulted Basit after he was apprehended, while another resident, Afolabi Lawal, disclosed that sticks and bottles were used during the attack.
Basit suffered an injury to his head, lost consciousness and later died.
Those involved in the assault reportedly dispersed after realising that he was no longer responding.
The tragedy occurred shortly after Basit returned to Nigeria from overseas for his forthcoming wedding, which was expected to take place roughly two weeks later.
Efforts to obtain a response from Lagos State Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi were unsuccessful on Sunday, as telephone calls and a text message to her went unanswered before the report was filed.
A police source, however, confirmed that arrests had been made in connection with Basit’s death. His body was also taken to a morgue.
