Lagos Police Disown Viral Video Claiming Arrest Of Fulani Men With Guns And Bullets, Say Clip Is Old
In a statement on Sunday, the Command said the video is not connected to any current security operation in the state.
The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media claiming that Fulani men were recently arrested in Ikorodu, Lagos State, with arms and ammunition, describing the footage as outdated and misleading.
In a statement on Sunday, the Command said the video is not connected to any current security operation in the state.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state unequivocally that the video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three (3) years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement said.
The police warned that the circulation of the old footage as a recent event is capable of causing panic among residents.
“The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear, and apprehension among residents,” it added.
The Command urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it, especially on social media platforms.
“The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of undermining public confidence and peace,” it said.
It also warned that individuals who deliberately spread misinformation would face prosecution.
“The Command further warns social media users and content creators against the dissemination of false, unverified, and alarmist stories capable of causing public disorder. Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, has ordered intensified security deployment across the state.
According to the statement, Fatai “has directed sustained and enhanced deployment of Police personnel and operational assets to identified black spots, strategic locations, and all entry and exit points across the State.”
It added that the measures were part of efforts to reassure residents of their safety.
“These proactive security measures are being carried out in close collaboration with other security and safety agencies to ensure the continued safety and security of all residents and visitors in Lagos State,” it said.
The Command further urged residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
“Residents are therefore encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures have been emplaced to guarantee the protection of lives and property,” it added.
The police also called on the public to support security agencies with credible intelligence.
“Members of the public are encouraged to partner with the Police and other security agencies by remaining vigilant and providing prompt, credible, and actionable information on suspicious persons, movements, or activities within their communities,” it said.
Online posts accompanying a viral video had claimed that Fulani herdsmen were arrested in Ikorodu with two vehicles allegedly loaded with bullets, guns, and explosive devices.
The posts further alleged that the incident occurred at a scrap yard in Powerline, Unity Estate CDA, Poromope, Idiroko, along the Itamaga–Ijede Road.
