Lagos Government To Prosecute Access Bank Officials For Alleged Attack On Enforcement Officers

The facility, owned by Access Bank Plc in the Oniru area of Victoria Island, was inspected following a whistleblower complaint about its wastewater treatment plant.
The Lagos State government has announced plans to prosecute individuals linked to an alleged attack on enforcement officers during an inspection of a commercial bank facility in Victoria Island.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said in an X post that officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office were obstructed while carrying out their duties at the premises.
The facility, owned by Access Bank Plc in the Oniru area of Victoria Island, was inspected following a whistleblower complaint about its wastewater treatment plant.
During the visit, security personnel and management representatives reportedly denied enforcement officers access and allegedly attacked members of the team.
Samples of the wastewater discharged from the facility were collected and sent for laboratory analysis, which confirmed a breach of environmental regulations.
“The State will also proceed to court to obtain the necessary orders for the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in the attack on government officials carrying out their lawful duties.”
The commissioner said additional enforcement officers would be deployed to ensure the facility is sealed in accordance with state environmental laws.
“Meanwhile, enforcement officers will be reinforced to return and seal off the property tonight in line with the Lagos State Environmental Laws.”

Wahab underlined that enforcement would apply to all individuals and organisations found violating environmental regulations.
“There will be no sacred cows in the enforcement of environmental regulations. Any individual or organisation found violating environmental laws, regardless of status, will be held accountable.”
