According to a report by The Sun on Saturday, June 20, 2026, Senator David Umahi, Minister of Works, has criticised Peter Obi, who is also the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election, over what he described as his silence on insecurity and the enforcement of sit-at-home directives in the South-East region of Nigeria.
He alleged that Obi has not taken a clear public position on these issues affecting the region, insisting that such silence raises concerns about leadership responsibility and accountability in public office and national politics.
The Minister further accused Obi of engaging in what he described as deceptive political behaviour, arguing that such conduct undermines his credibility and suitability for the presidency.
According to him, no political leader can aspire to occupy the highest office in the country while allegedly avoiding critical national issues or failing to address pressing security challenges that directly affect citizens, particularly in regions experiencing unrest and economic disruption.
Umahi also stated that leadership is fundamentally anchored on truth, accountability, and a consistent record of verifiable public service.
He stressed that these qualities are essential benchmarks for anyone seeking to govern Nigeria.
In his remarks, he maintained that aspiring leaders must demonstrate transparency and a proven history of service delivery, which he described as non-negotiable standards for national leadership and public trust.
The remarks were made on Friday, June 19, 2026, during an inspection visit to Section 2 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway project located in Epe, Lagos State.
The project forms part of the federal government’s major infrastructure development agenda, and the Minister’s visit was focused on assessing the progress of construction work and ensuring compliance with set timelines and quality standards on the highway corridor.
During the same engagement, Umahi reaffirmed his political alignment with President Bola Tinubu, stating that the leadership of Bola Tinubu had already received endorsement from Ebonyi State.
He emphasised that his state had openly declared support for the President’s administration, describing it as a collective political decision reflecting the stance of key stakeholders in the state and beyond.
He further reiterated that political loyalty in Ebonyi State is firmly aligned with the current administration, insisting that opposition movements such as the Obedient Movement do not represent the political direction of the state.
He maintained that support for the President extends across the South-East political landscape and would become increasingly evident in the build-up to future elections, as political alignments continue to take shape.
He said: “We recently adopted President Tinubu in Ebonyi State. I will not stop speaking. I will not stop defending Nigerians and our people.”
“I want everybody to know that Ebonyi is not for the Obedient Movement. Our loyalty is to President Bola Tinubu, and so is that of the entire Southeast. People will see it.”
