Jubilation as Government annouces increment of Teachers Salary

There is jubilation among primary school teachers in Kebbi State after Governor Nasir Idris approved a major salary increase.

According to the Kebbi State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Zaki Sarki, the governor has approved full sequential and consequential adjustment for all primary school teachers in the state.

He also restored headmasters allowance and assistant headmasters allowance that was abandoned decades ago by previous governments.

The NUT chairman said this was a promise kept by Governor Nasir Idris, who is himself a former teacher and former National President of NUT.

He said primary school teachers have been waiting for this adjustment since the new minimum wage was approved, and now the teacher governor has delivered.

Before now, many teachers complained that the N18,000 and N30,000 minimum wages were not properly reflected in their salary structure unlike secondary school teachers. The governor had already increased monthly salary allocation for primary school teachers from N586 million to over N1.2 billion, and implemented N75,000 minimum wage.

Other achievements listed by NUT in Kebbi include:

Construction of over 200 schools and renovation of many others

Recruitment of 2,000 primary school teachers, 1,500 secondary school teachers and 500 science teachers

Absorption of over 300 volunteer teachers

Regular promotion of teachers for 2023, 2024 and 2025 with payment of promotion arrears

Payment of 2024 and 2025 leave grants

Settlement of backlog of gratuities and prompt payment of pensions

Approval of car loan, motorcycle loan and housing loan schemes for teachers

Regular training and capacity building for teachers

Comrade Zaki said this new approval will encourage teachers to put in their best and he asked teachers across the state to rededicate themselves to duty to complement the effort of the governor.

Teachers in Birnin Kebbi and other LGAs are now celebrating the development, describing it as historic and teacher friendly.
