Speaking about his father’s condition, Hunter said the illness has taken a heavy toll on both Biden and the family.
Hunter Biden has revealed that his father, former United States President Joe Biden, is battling an increasingly difficult stage of cancer, saying the disease has spread to his bones and become “very painful” and “debilitating.”
Hunter, the former president’s only surviving son, made the emotional remarks in an interview with the BBC published on Saturday, offering one of the most candid updates yet on Biden’s health since he disclosed his cancer diagnosis after leaving office.
Speaking about his father’s condition, Hunter said the illness has taken a heavy toll on both Biden and the family.
“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said.
He disclosed that the cancer had metastasised to his father’s bones “and further,” describing the disease as increasingly difficult to witness.
“It’s very painful… very debilitating,” he said.
“Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch.”
Despite the seriousness of the illness, Hunter portrayed his father as the emotional anchor of the Biden family.
“My dad is, to this day, the centre of our family,” he said.
“He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”
Joe Biden publicly announced in May 2025, four months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
At the time, the former president said he was optimistic about his treatment and thanked supporters around the world for their goodwill.
“I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well,” Biden said last month.
“I want to thank all those who have offered their prayers and support and well-wishes. It’s meant the world to me and to Jill.”
The former president had also expressed confidence in his medical team and the treatment plan, saying doctors believed the disease could be managed.
“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” Biden had said.
“It’s all a matter of taking a pill, one particular pill, for the next six weeks. And the expectation is we’re going to be able to beat this.”
Since revealing his diagnosis, Biden has largely stayed out of public life, saying he has been spending more time with his family while undergoing treatment.
His health had already been under intense public scrutiny during the closing months of his presidency and throughout the 2024 United States presidential campaign, with concerns over his age and physical condition dominating political debate.
In July 2024, Biden ended his bid for re-election and withdrew from the presidential race, paving the way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic Party’s nominee.
Harris, however, went on to lose the November 2024 election to Republican candidate Donald Trump, who returned to the White House.
Hunter’s latest comments provide a more sobering picture of the former president’s health than previous public statements, suggesting that the cancer has continued to progress despite ongoing treatment.
The former president is also expected to publish his memoir, Promise Me, America, in November, a book anticipated to reflect on his decades-long political career, his presidency, and the personal challenges that have shaped his public life.
