In other news… Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has opened up about her past struggle with substance abuse while urging Nigerians to stay away from drugs.Travel tips NigeriaLocal news portal
In a lengthy post shared on social media, the actress said she had experienced the difficult side of addiction and could testify that drugs do not take away emotional pain.
According to Tonto, the pain remains while addiction gradually takes over a person’s life.
“Say no to drugs.
I’ve been down this dark road, and I can tell you first-hand: substances don’t make the pain go away.
The hurt stays, and addiction slowly steals your life, one day at a time.”
She said her own experience taught her that the circumstances surrounding a person do not define who they are, adding that anyone struggling with addiction can still seek help and rebuild their life.
Tonto also reflected on how people judged her during what she described as one of the darkest periods of her life.
“I was once the chaos people judged.
The noise. The mess. The broken decisions.
But what many didn’t see was the truth behind it all.
Behind the anger, the addiction, the self-destruction,
was a soul screaming for help, not attention.
I wasn’t lost because I loved the darkness.
I was lost because I was hurting.
I was desperate for relief, for peace, for someone to see past my actions and hear my cry.”
The actress described drugs as a symptom of deeper pain rather than her identity, saying she eventually found help and a path to recovery.
“Drugs weren’t the problem; they were the symptom.
Addiction wasn’t my identity; it was my escape from pain I didn’t know how to name.”
She also called for compassion towards people battling addiction, urging the public to pray for and support them rather than writing them off.
“But never stop praying for the person trapped inside it.
Because that person is not weak, not worthless, not beyond redemption.”
Tonto ended her message by encouraging anyone struggling with substance abuse to seek help and reminding them that recovery is possible.
