Isreal hits Gaza hospital, journalists, others killed

Israeli airstrikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, on Monday left at least 15 people dead, among them three journalists, according to Palestinian health officials.

One of the victims, Hussam al-Masri, was a cameraman contracted by Reuters. Another Reuters contractor, photographer Hatem Khaled, was reported wounded in the attack.

The strikes came just days after the United Nations formally declared a famine in Gaza—the first such designation ever made in the Middle East. UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher described the situation as “the Gaza famine,” accusing Israel of systematically obstructing aid deliveries to the war-battered territory.

Israel, however, dismissed the UN findings, with its foreign ministry insisting there is “no famine in Gaza,” calling the assessment “Hamas lies laundered through organisations with vested interests.”

The famine designation was made by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Initiative (IPC), a UN-mandated coalition of monitors. According to IPC criteria, famine is declared when 20% of households face extreme food shortages, 30% of children under five suffer acute malnutrition, and at least two out of every 10,000 people die daily from starvation or related diseases.

The attack on Nasser Hospital is the latest in a series of deadly strikes that have intensified international concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
