Israeli police have arrested a 25-year-old Arab Israeli suspected of carrying out missions for Iranian agents in exchange for thousands of shekels, amid a wider investigation into alleged Iranian recruitment operations inside Israel.
According to The Times of Israel, the suspect, identified as Mohammad Halaf from Baqa al-Gharbiya in northern Israel, allegedly established contact with Iranian operatives and completed tasks for them in return for payment.
Police and the Shin Bet security agency said the case involved suspected activity that could harm Israel’s state security.
Halaf was expected to appear before the Haifa District Court on Friday, where prosecutors were due to seek an indictment on security-related charges. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the suspect has not been convicted of any offence.
Israeli authorities said the suspected contact with Iranian agents formed part of a pattern seen in several investigations in recent years. According to Israeli security officials, suspected Iranian operatives have frequently approached potential recruits through social media and encrypted messaging platforms, including Telegram.
The arrest comes as Israel continues to investigate alleged Iranian intelligence and influence operations targeting people inside the country.
Israeli authorities have arrested dozens of suspects over the past two years on allegations of collecting information, carrying out surveillance or performing other tasks on behalf of Iranian handlers.
The latest case also comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran and a series of investigations involving suspected Iranian activity in Israel and abroad. Israeli and Western officials have recently examined possible Iranian links to separate incidents.
The case against Halaf is expected to be tested in court, where prosecutors will have to present evidence supporting the allegations and the suspected connection with Iranian agents.
Further details about the specific missions he allegedly carried out were expected to emerge as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
