Ireland Deports 42 South Africans in €735,000 Charter Flight Crackdown on Illegal Immigration
Ireland has deported 42 South African nationals who were found to be living illegally in the country, spending an estimated €735,000 (about $845,000) on the charter flight operation.
The group, comprising 9 men, 18 women and 15 children travelling in family units, departed Dublin on Thursday and arrived in Johannesburg on Friday. Irish authorities said the deportees were removed under deportation orders issued by the Garda National Immigration Bureau after failing to take up options for voluntary return.
Officials also confirmed that two of the deported individuals had previous criminal convictions in Ireland.
Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said the operation was necessary to maintain a “rules-based and robust” immigration system, stressing that enforcement measures are essential to public confidence in immigration laws.
“Our immigration system must be rules-based and robust,” O’Callaghan said.
The minister noted that the deportation flight was Ireland’s fourth such operation in 2026. Earlier charter flights this year removed 130 people from the country, including 67 EU citizens on grounds of criminality.
The development comes amid wider migration tensions involving South Africa. While South African citizens face stricter immigration enforcement abroad, the country is also dealing with growing anti-immigrant sentiment and concerns over undocumented migration at home.
Reports indicate that hundreds of foreign nationals, including Nigerians, remain affected by migration-related challenges in South Africa, with some awaiting evacuation and assistance as concerns over safety and living conditions persist.
