The political future of senator Ali Ndume hangs in balance as plot to thwart his return to the senate thickens.
Senator Ali Ndume who represents Borno South senatorial district at the senate since 2011 till date faces uncertain future over alleged conflict of interest between Borno state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum and vice president Kashim Shettima over political power sharing in Borno state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A source privy to the development confidentially told Reliant.ng that vice president Kashim Shettima is determined to ensuring that senator Ali Ndume is denied the All Progressive Congress (APC) senatorial ticket for Borno south senatorial district.
The source claims that vice president Kashim Shettima has unequivocally declared that senator Ali Ndume will not return to the senate due to his “uncooperative nature and dissenting views” on the president Tinubu’s administration. According to the source, vice president Kashim Shettima seeks to prove his loyalty to his principal, president Bola Ahmed Tinubu by ensuring that Ali Ndume does not return to the senate–a move governor Zulum is averse to, insisting that Ali Ndume be given the APC senatorial ticket for Borno state south.
There is gang up against senator Ali Ndume due to how he has been criticizing the current administration. So vice president Kashim Shettima may have assured his oga that he will ensure that Ndume is denied reelection to prove his loyalty. The vice president’s move is being resisted by governor Zulum who already has unsettled issues with Shettima over who succeeds him as Borno state governor”.
The source also alleged that vice president Shettima has concluded that the current speaker of Borno state Assembly, Abdullahi Musa Askira replaces Ali Ndume in the senate.
The vice president has chosen Musa Askira as Ali Ndume’s replacement, unwilling to listen to governor Zulum on the matter”, the source added.
He added that governor Zulum who has been handling the issue of his successor with vice president diplomatically, has thrown his support behind Ali Ndume, insisting that the senator should be given reelection ticket for the senate.
Governor Zulum is supporting Ali Ndume and insisting that he returns to the senate. Even though the governor had previously stated that he wants the issue of power sharing in the state to be peacefully handled, the governor feels disappointed over the way the issues of power sharing in the APC and governorship successor are being handled”.
