INEC Clarifies IReV Role Ahead Of Osun Governorship Election

OSOGBO, Nigeria, August 14 (African News Digest) – The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has clarified that its Election Results Viewing Portal, IReV, is designed to display polling unit results publicly and is not an electronic system for adding or collating election figures.

INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, made the clarification while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

Ajayi assured Nigerians that results from the election would be uploaded to the IReV portal through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, as they become available.

He explained that IReV serves as a public viewing platform, allowing voters, political parties, observers and other stakeholders to see results transmitted from polling units.

“The IReV is a viewing centre. There’s a misinformation when it comes to the function of the IReV. The IReV is not an adding machine,” Ajayi said.

According to him, individuals, political parties and organisations can independently collate the results displayed on the portal by adding the figures from individual polling units.

The commissioner said the critical issue is whether the results uploaded to IReV correspond with the results recorded at the respective polling units.

He also assured Nigerians that INEC would improve the speed and efficiency of results transmission during the Osun election.

The clarification comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the electoral process, particularly the role of BVAS and electronic transmission in strengthening transparency and public confidence in Saturday’s poll.
