Brazil and Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos has revealed that he lost 99% of the money he earned during his football career because of problems involving agents and family members.
The former defender said he was left with almost nothing after unexpectedly receiving documents he did not know existed.
Brazil and Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos has revealed that he lost 99% of the money he accumulated during his football career following financial problems involving agents and family members.
The former Brazil international made the revelation while speaking at the Portugal Football Summit, where he discussed the importance of preparing financially for life after football.
Carlos said the problems left him with almost nothing despite his successful career and earnings from playing for top clubs.
“I had problems with people who left me with zero money. Because of agents and family issues, I lost 99 per cent of everything I had earned in football.
“I made mistakes, and that’s why I ask younger players not to make the same mistakes.
“On a Thursday, I went to bed at midnight, and on Friday, I received a bunch of papers I didn’t even know existed. That’s when I lost my entire history.”
His wealth has previously been estimated at about £133 million by media reports. Carlos said he later managed to rebuild his financial and family life with the help of a friend.
He also said he had prepared for retirement by obtaining a sports director’s licence and working with several brands.
“I always thought about my post-career. It means building a legacy as a player and using your image.”
Carlos retired from professional football in 2012 and remains involved with Real Madrid as an ambassador.
