Tech mogul and former Trump administration adviser Elon Musk on Saturday forcefully denied a damning report by The New York Times alleging that he extensively used ketamine and other drugs during the 2024 election campaign.
The Times reported Friday that Musk, who served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump, used such high quantities of ketamine that he developed bladder complications.
The report also claimed Musk consumed ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms and allegedly carried a pill box during travels.
It remains unclear, according to the paper, whether Musk consumed the substances while actively serving in the federal role that oversaw mass layoffs in the civil service.
Taking to his social media platform X, Musk slammed the report: “Also, to be clear, I am NOT taking drugs! The New York Times was lying their ass off.”
He acknowledged trying prescription ketamine in the past and noting that he had disclosed that publicly: “I tried *prescription* ketamine a few years ago and said so on 𝕏, so this not even news. It helps for getting out of dark mental holes, but haven’t taken it since then.”
The tech billionaire’s denial came a day after a rare Oval Office sendoff with Trump, during which Musk appeared sporting a visible black eye as he formally stepped down from his role at DOGE.
The Times article also highlighted Musk’s history of erratic behaviour, citing an incident last year in which he was seen giving what was described as an enthusiastic Nazi-style salute.
Musk said the black eye was the result of play-fighting with his young son, publicly known as “X,” and that he had told the child to punch him in the face.
Later on Friday, a reporter asked former President Donald Trump whether he was aware of Musk’s alleged drug use.
“I wasn’t,” Trump replied. “I think Elon is a fantastic guy.”
