Hit-And-Run Driver Kills Two Young Men In Enugu, Police Launch Manhunt
The incident occurred at about 10am on Wednesday and left residents and eyewitnesses traumatised, with the driver reportedly fleeing the scene without stopping to assist the victims.
Ahit-and-run driver has killed two young men in the Emene area of Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, after reportedly speeding through Airport Corner and knocking down the victims.
The incident occurred at about 10am on Wednesday and left residents and eyewitnesses traumatised, with the driver reportedly fleeing the scene without stopping to assist the victims.
According to eyewitness accounts, one of the victims had developed a fault with his vehicle and had gone to a nearby mechanic workshop at Airport Corner to collect tools to fix it.
The victim was reportedly returning the tools to the mechanic after repairing his vehicle when the speeding driver suddenly knocked him down.
An eyewitness said the impact killed him instantly and severed one of his legs before the vehicle went on to hit another person, who was also killed.
“After he finished fixing the car, he was about to return the tools to the workshop when a very reckless driver knocked him down at excessive speed as he entered the corner.
“He was killed instantly and one of his legs was chopped off. As if that wasn’t enough, he knocked another person down, killing two of them instantly, and zoomed off,” the eyewitness said.
Another witness said the driver did not stop to ascertain the condition of the victims and continued at high speed towards the Airport Roundabout, where he allegedly nearly caused another accident.
The source said the vehicle was travelling from the Emene axis towards Enugu city centre when the incident occurred.
Confirming the incident, the Enugu State Police Command said the driver fled the scene and that efforts were underway to identify and arrest him.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said, “I can confirm that a hit-and-run driver killed two people and ran away. The happened in Emene by Airport Corner and the police have a report of the incident and investigation is ongoing to track down the driver.”
The latest incident comes amid growing concerns over road safety and enforcement of traffic regulations in Enugu State.
SaharaReporters reported last month that a hit-and-run driver killed a police inspector, Dr Ikechukwu Obodo, near the Government House in Enugu.
Weeks after the death of Obodo, police are yet to announce the arrest of the driver involved in the incident, while members of his family alleged that he was knocked down by a vehicle in a convoy belonging either to the state governor or a prominent person in the state.
The latest fatal crash also comes just after the Enugu State Police Command announced a renewed crackdown on motorists violating traffic regulations.
The command said the enforcement followed what it described as widespread disregard for traffic rules, which had contributed to traffic congestion, road crashes, loss of lives and destruction of property.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, issued the directive on Tuesday following an order by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for nationwide enforcement of traffic laws.
In a statement issued by Ndukwe, the command said the enforcement would cover all existing traffic laws and regulations across the state and would be carried out in accordance with the law.
