“He Said He Would Go” – Cardinal Onaiyekan Explains Why Governor Alia Is No Longer A Catholic Priest
Cardinal John Onaiyekan has explained why Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia is no longer a Roman Catholic priest, saying the church’s rules were not followed when he pursued his political ambition.
He stated that Alia’s bishop had warned him against proceeding and threatened to suspend him if he went ahead.

Cardinal John Onaiyekan has explained why Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia is no longer a Roman Catholic priest, stating that the church’s rules were not followed when Alia decided to pursue a political career.
In a statement addressing the issue, Onaiyekan said he had nothing against the governor personally but maintained that the church’s requirements had to be respected.
“I have nothing against Father Alia, but you’re asking a question, the law of our church has not been followed, he did not meet those criteria and his bishop told him no, and he decided he will go and his bishop said okay, if you go, I suspend you,” the cardinal said.
His comments have reignited discussions online about Alia’s transition from the priesthood to politics and the church’s position on the matter.
Some users criticised the governor, while others questioned the circumstances surrounding his departure from active priestly ministry. One commenter also raised the example of former Benue State Governor Moses Adasu, who was a Catholic priest before entering politics.
The debate has drawn attention to the distinction between serving as a priest and pursuing elected political office within the Roman Catholic Church.
