Governor To Scrap NURTW Leadership In Motor Parks Over Violent Clashes
Adeleke said he had already escalated the matter to the nation’s top security authorities, calling for swift action against those allegedly behind the violence.
The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has threatened to withdraw the control of motor parks from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and restore the Park Management System if violent clashes and disruptions linked to the union continue across the state.
The governor issued the warning on Monday following violent incidents at motor parks in Osogbo, the state capital, where gunshots reportedly disrupted commercial activities and created panic among commuters and residents.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke condemned what he described as an early morning disruption of public peace allegedly led by Asiri Eniba and other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging security agencies to arrest those responsible.
Reacting to the development, the governor condemned repeated shootings and the intimidation of innocent residents around Old Garage and other motor parks in Osogbo. He also expressed concern over what he described as police protection for the individuals allegedly involved in the unrest.
“The video of sporadic shooting by Asiri and his gang is everywhere on social media. Lorry loads of police men accompanied Asiri and his group as they paraded across motorway parks in the state,” the governor lamented.
Adeleke said he had already escalated the matter to the nation’s top security authorities, calling for swift action against those allegedly behind the violence.
“I have personally called the attention of the Inspector General of Police and other service chiefs to these open attacks on public peace. I demand immediate arrest of Asiri Eniba for this open defiance of public security act.”
The governor questioned the motive behind the attacks, arguing that no legitimate protest should endanger the lives of innocent commuters and residents using the state’s motor parks.
As part of measures to restore order, Adeleke warned that his administration could reconsider its support for the NURTW’s management of motor parks across Osun State if the violence persists.
“I believe the Alowonle leadership of Osun NURTW will call its people to order. If this Asiri Eniba’s disorderly conduct continues, our government may be forced to revert to the Park Management System across Osun motor parks,” the governor submitted.
The warning signals a possible return to the Park Management System previously introduced by the Adeleke administration before the restoration of NURTW’s control of motor parks following legal and political developments in the state.
The latest violence adds to growing concerns over security at motor parks in Osun, with the governor insisting that public facilities must not become flashpoints for political confrontations or violent clashes.
Adeleke maintained that his administration would not tolerate actions capable of threatening public safety or disrupting economic activities within the state. He urged law enforcement agencies to act decisively to restore order and ensure that those responsible for the shootings and other acts of violence are brought to justice.
Previously , in a separate report, SaharaReporters reported that Adeleke called for calm following a suspected cult-related killing in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, directing security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those behind the violence and prevent a further breakdown of law and order.
The governor, in a statement issued last Thursday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, condemned the killing and the ensuing violence, describing the incidents as unacceptable and warning that they could worsen the state’s already fragile security situation.
According to the statement, the governor also dismissed allegations linking his administration to the incident, insisting that neither he nor the state government had any involvement in the killing.
Adeleke said, “We receive with concern recent suspected cult killing at Osogbo and we call on security agencies to enforce the law and go after the culprits. The killing and the subsequent rampage are condemnable.”
The governor stressed that security agencies must act swiftly to restore normalcy and ensure that those responsible for the violence are identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. He emphasized that criminal activities, particularly those linked to cult groups, should not be allowed to threaten the peace and safety of residents.
He further warned that unchecked cult-related violence could aggravate the security challenges already confronting the state in the aftermath of recent political disturbances.
